It’s the dreaded question at parties, family reunions, and networking events. Instantly I scramble. My first thought is, “That is a really good question.”
Have you ever seen those “What I Do” graphics? Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they’re ridiculous, and sometimes – just sometimes – they are completely true. I don’t know about you, but as someone in marketing, sometimes that picture is my life.
The best part is to then dive into the questions about email marketing, Internet marketing automation software, inbound marketing automation, content marketing – and lots of other super fun jargon and buzzwords. Seriously, is there a marketing automation Wikipedia reference for all of this somewhere? My brain hurts.
It shouldn’t be this hard. I love what I do.
My job is probably a combination of all of the pictures in that image, but above all, it is fun. I get to listen to the company’s goals, collaborate with the sales team and learn about their goals and challenges for the upcoming quarters, and strategically plan ways to help achieve those goals. I craft messages that will appeal to our target audience and I engage the right external personas to help deliver our messages to the right people at the right time.
So the other day as I tried to explain yet again what I do, I decided to forget all of the marketing jargon and buzzwords around marketing automation. The definition of my job? I get to be a part of a group of super smart, passionate people as we work to achieve our goals.
It’s that simple – and I don’t need a marketing automation wiki to explain it. Now, here’s hoping I can explain that to Grandma in a way she will understand at the next Chesley picnic.
